Book Review: Finding ‘The Power of Now’ in Big Sur, CA

The Power of Now is about doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.

By Danny Pena

Big Sur is a beautiful, rugged stretch of California’s central coast between Carmel and San Simeon. It boasts stunning views from a winding highway and poor cell phone service. It’s truly a place where you have no choice but to be present and in the now.

For February’s book review I read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. I thought it was an interesting read because it definitely aids inner-growth. One caveat, though, if this is your first time reading a spiritually enlightened book on personal growth, the writing style can be a bit confusing — so take it slow.

The Power of Now is about doing what you can, where you are, with what you have. Tolle focuses on two main points:

  1. The now and understanding why the present is the most important thing you have. It’s actually the only thing we have.
  2. There is a power we can have if we live, breathe and exist in the now. The only problem is that sounds a lot easier said than actually doing it.

The Power of Now is about releasing expectations and understanding the truth to every moment.

This book talks about all the areas in our life where we can get caught up in the past or the future, and Tolle does a great job highlighting each of these aspects and breaking down the power of now. I like how he brings up different scenarios and responses that the reader might have to try and reject his teachings, addressing all of your problems and really breaking down any questions that might occur.

The Power of Now is about releasing expectations and understanding the truth to every moment. To understand that we are Human-being, not Human becoming.

With that being said, I liked the book because I can identify what Tolle is saying. I’m glad I learned the importance of how crucial it is to always try to be in the present moment.

Big Sur, CA

I say “try” because we’re not perfect, we will tend to lose focus of the present moment but it’s a step by step process.

Personal growth takes time and patience and it’s a practice I want to continue focusing on.

Last year, I spent a secluded and disconnected week in Big Sur, CA with my life partner. We had no cell phone service. We camped in a man-made nest overlooking the beautiful ocean and listened to the sea lions sing. It was a time in my life where I was deep in the present moment and I loved it.

I think it’s important to disconnect and try getting out of town at least once a year. Go ghost for a weekend and be in tune with nature. I guarantee you will begin get a true understanding of the power of now.
